How to teach kids to ski
Teaching kids to ski
So you’ve booked your skiing holiday and can’t wait to spend some time on the slopes. But this time it’s different. This time the children are old enough to go with you and try out the sport for themselves. Whilst you’re happy to zoom down the black runs, what’s the best way to get the kids skiing ?
Before you hit the slopes
One of the best things to do before even beginning any lessons with your kids is to get them used to the different skiing positions. Practice exercises such as knee bends with them or balancing games where you all stand on one foot.
The next step is to get your kids used to the skiing equipment. Even before you are near the snow, let them try the gear on, put their feet in the skis and become familiar with everything. Talk them through what each part of the equipment does and why it’s important. And have fun with dressing up.
Pre-holiday prep
If you want to give yourself a flying start then there are plenty of places around the UK where you can get lessons for your kids on indoor slopes with trained instructors. If you have the time then it makes sense to start their skiing adventure before you fly off for the real thing.
Maybe ski lessons aren't practical in your everyday life? If so then it’s still possible to begin when you reach the mountains. Thousands of kids have learned to ski without professional lessons and, if you are a competent skier, you can try teaching them the basics is one way to get your family on the slopes a lot sooner.
The first day
It goes without saying that their first days on the slope should be a gentle introduction to the sport. Today is all about building confidence and getting used to the actual feeling of being on the snow.
Once they’re all suited up and you are out on the snow, start with walking slowly on a flat surface, including learning how to move sideways. The next skills to teach after that is turning and stopping, hopefully, their confidence levels will start to rise. There’s likely to be a lot of falling over and getting up again, but keep reassuring them that this happens to everyone.
Then you’re ready for the gentlest of slopes and getting them used to moving forward. Keep things playful. Start a follow the leader game. Take regular breaks with the promise of a hot chocolate drink as a reward for their hard work
We can help
If you’ve booked a holiday with Club Med then we can do the hard work for you when it comes to kids’ skiing lessons.
Our professional instructors have a huge amount of experience in introducing even toddlers to the sport. You’ll find the right equipment for hire and lessons at every ski resort we run and it means you can get on with enjoying your own time on the piste while the little ones pick up the skills they’ll need to join you later.
Keep it slow
Don’t expect that your first holiday away with the kids will result in them becoming expert skiers ready to tackle a tough black run. Go at the speed that makes them comfortable. Skiing is most pleasurable when people learn at their own pace. Push things too hard and you could put them off your hobby for life.
Don't forget your kids won't have your stamina. Eight runs a day might be okay for the adults but it can be far too much for the little ones. Give them a break and let them enjoy lots of other great activities a Club Med resort has to offer children.
