Snowboarding checklist: what equipment you need
Snowboarding’s a wonderful sport but before you head for the mountains , you’re going to need to invest in some equipment that will keep you safe and warm. Before you even step on your first snowboard, you’re going to need to invest in some equipment that will keep you safe and warm. Whilst some of this snowboarding equipment can be hired at Club Med resorts, it’s always good to have items suited to your needs and fitted to your body shape. Here are some snowboarding basics that you should think about buying before hitting the slopes.
Core Equipment
Snowboard: Choose a board based on your height, weight, and skill level. There are different types for various styles like freestyle, all-mountain, and freeride.
Bindings: These attach your boots to the snowboard. They come in different flex levels depending on your style of riding.
Snowboard Boots: Proper-fitting boots are essential for comfort and control. They should match the flex of your bindings.
Clothing and Outerwear
Snowboard Jacket: Waterproof, insulated, and breathable to keep you warm and dry.
Snowboard Pants: Like the jacket, these should be waterproof and insulated.
Base Layers: Thermal tops and bottoms that wick moisture away from your body.
Socks: Snowboard-specific socks that offer warmth and cushioning without being too thick.
Gloves/Mittens: Waterproof and insulated for warmth. Mittens are generally warmer, while gloves offer more dexterity.
Neck Gaiter or Balaclava: To protect your face from the cold and wind.
Protective Gear
Helmet: A must for safety. It should fit snugly but comfortably.
Goggles: Protects your eyes from snow, wind, and harmful UV rays. They also enhance visibility in varying light conditions.
Wrist Guards: Helpful for beginners who are prone to falls.
Impact Shorts: Padding for your hips and tailbone to prevent bruises from falls.
Knee Pads: Optional, but useful for added protection.
Body Armor (optional): For more aggressive riders or those doing tricks, body armor for the back, chest, and shoulders is available.
Extras
Snowboard Leash: Required at some resorts to prevent runaway boards.
Stomp Pad: Helps with one-footed control, especially on chairlifts.
Wax and Tuning Kit: To maintain your board’s base and edges for better performance.
