Which month and which country for your next ski holiday?
When and where to go on your next ski holiday
When are you planning to take a ski holiday? It could be a Christmas treat for the entire family, half term in February or some late snow in the warmer months of March and April. We’ve got a short guide to the best country to visit during the time of your choice.
December
If you’re heading for the slopes in December then those focused on skiing should go early on in the month to avoid the crowds. You’re not being a Scrooge, you’re being sensible. For those hoping to give the kids a festive treat then every Club Med resort can offer a magical experience where the slopes are full of people in fancy dress and the evenings shimmer and twinkle with beautiful lights.
In our opinion, the French Alps are the place to go at this time of year. In particular, Christmas in our Les Arcs resort is truly wonderful. There’s always plenty going on to keep everyone happy and the torch-lit descent down the mountain at night is truly unforgettable. You can even arrange for Santa to visit your chalet, opening the door to reveal a picture-perfect Christmas card landscape.
January
Things have quietened down since Christmas and prices are lower, which makes it a great time to explore the Italian Alps where a slightly warmer climate will take away the chill of the year’s coldest month.
Club Med Pragelato Sestriere offers a memorable start to the year with its collection of pretty hamlets and brilliant snow at a lower altitude than many resorts. The Olympic slopes will be yours for the taking and it’s a good opportunity to stretch your skiing skills on the tougher runs. With fewer holidaymakers, you’ll be able to easily get a table at one of the many fantastic restaurants the area has to offer where you can enjoy the best of Italian cuisine.
February
It’s half term time meaning the big crowds are back. If you’re with the family then Club Med resorts across the Alps will have everything you need to keep the little ones entertained. However, the Grand Massif in France is particularly good for your group of adventurers: busy without being overwhelming.
The combination of easy and difficult slopes makes the resort good for everyone of all abilities and the range of entertainment available means that you can keep the kids happy while you get in some serious snow time. Make sure you get them to make you a meal with the unique Bread & Co experience.
March
The weather’s warming up and it’s a great time to visit Switzerland and the sheer glamour of Saint-Moritz . March is the warmest month of the season and usually offers the best snow conditions. Most people will have visited in February, meaning the lifts are easier to ride and the restaurants are less crowded.
This legendary resort offers amazing experiences such as horse-drawn rides and authentic Swiss food including the best fondue you’ll ever taste. Just relax in the sheer glamour of the location and enjoy over 350km of slopes.
April/May
Skiing later on in the season is always something of a gamble. With our unpredictable weather, there could be less snow on the lower slopes and choosing a resort with a higher altitude is always a good idea.
We’d recommend either Val Thorens or Tignes in France which are based well up the mountain and close to glaciers where the ski-conditions are consistently good. Remember that Easter is going to be busy.
